Maggi was my mentor at the Red Cross. She taught me how to meet the homeless and drug-users right where they were at in life, with the utmost compassion and without judgment. She took us to wild places where no one sensible would have gone, but her sincerity in the caring she had towards all human beings was her armor.
From her, I learned about assessment and addiction, and respecting people’s autonomy to not recover if they were not ready to do so. Maggi was a storehouse of facts about drugs and alcohol and always willing to teach.
Maggi’s sense of humor and her ringing laughter were the only thing that kept us going some days. Jokes were always about the situations we found ourselves in, and never at the cost of someone’s dignity. Wherever we went, professionals knew Maggi and treated her with well-earned respect.
Maggi was also able to relate to high school kid clients through her bluntness, maintaining respect towards them as she gently taught them what they didn’t know about health risks. This is a picture of one of those presentations.
She was an excellent counselor who taught me to not only listen to what was being said, but what was left unsaid.
I am sad you are gone, dear Maggi, but I already use what you have taught me in my work every day, so you will live on, not only in my memory of our past adventures, but you will continue to influence others through me in the future.

Maggie’s smile and laughter were contagious. She was such a strong advocate and fought hard for those under her care. She will be missed by many. I’m so sorry for your loss.
