Obituary of Richard Wyllie Gillies

Richard W. Gillies, MD, age 90 of Shickshinny, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Residential Hospice, Wilkes-Barre. He was born in Weymouth, MA on September 13, 1930, and was the son of the late Charles W. and Marjorie Sullivan Gillies. Richard graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelors in Arts in 1952. He then went on to graduate from Boston University, School of Medicine. He obtained a Retaining Internship with the U.S. Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA in 1959, his General Surgical Residency with the V.A. Hospital, Jamaica Plain, MA in 1960, his OB/GYN Residency with Boston City Hospital in 1961, his Anesthesia Residency with New England Medical Center, Boston in 1979, his Anesthesia Fellow in New England Medical Center in 1981, and became Chief Anesthesiologist with the V.A. Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre in 1982. He served with the United States Navy during the Korean War as a Communication Officer. Richard went on to serve on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology beginning in 1967 and the American Board of Anesthesiology. His research in the field of pregnancy was published in 1965. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake. In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by son, Philip C. Gillies; brother, Greg; and sister, Barbara. He is survived by wife, Linda, Shickshinny; sons, Andrew and wife Catherine, Newton, MA and Christopher and wife Nancy of Hammonton, NJ; daughter, Katherine Gillies of Cambria, CA; step-daughter, Beth Harris and husband Reed of Emmaus; step-son, Scott Bowen and companion Roxanne Doran of Easton; brother, Donald, Annadale, VA; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 23, 2021 at 11:00 AM from Our Lady of Victory Church, 16 2nd Street, Harveys Lake, PA 18618. Interment will be in St. Anne's Cemetery, Lehman Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Our Lady of Victory Church, 16 2nd St, Harveys Lake, PA 18618 or the Medical Oncology Associates, Prescription Assistance Fund, 382 Pierce St. Kingston, PA 18704, or a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corner of Routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek.
