Obituary of Severn Brown Newberry

Severn B. Newberry, Jr., age 74 of Hunlock Creek, passed away peacefully Monday, November 16, 2015 at home. Sev was born in Wilkes-Barre on March 4, 1941 and was the son of the late Severn B., Sr. and Hilda Boyer Newberry. Sev was a police officer for 37 years with Leman Twp., Dallas Boro, and Dallas Twp. He was also a former chief of Lake Silkworth Fire Dept. Sev was a lifelong member and secretary of George M. Dallas Lodge #531 for 31 years. He was also active in the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg. Sev's father started the family business Sev's Sign in 1927 and he took over the company running it since 1961. His favorite places to visit were Disney World, FL, and Ft. Wilderness campground where he spent 264 days camping. He and his wife also loved their 11,000 mile trip to Alaska in their motor home. Sev's family would like to thank their wonderful friends, home health nurses, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for his wonderful care. He is survived by wife of 54 years, the former Diane Horlacher; daughter, Lynne Root and her husband Bob of Hunlock Creek; son, Sev Douglas Newberry and his fianc Ginger Leyc of Hunlock Creek; grandchildren, Bill Volkel of Sweet Valley, Tim Ide of Hunlock Creek, Stephanie Newberry of Forty-Fort, Richele Bronson of Hunlock Creek, Janelle Akers of Hunlock Creek, and Julia Newberry of Hunlock Creek; great-grandchildren, Haleigh, Chelsie, Carter, and Lucas. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 5:00 pm from the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corner of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek, with Pastor James Pall of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church and Rev. Richard Fox of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, officiating. Friends may call 2:00 - 5:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home.
