Obituary of Thelma Mary Whittington

Dolly (Martinson) Whittington, age 98, passed away peacefully Friday, October 16, 2015 at Harveys Lake.
Mrs. Whittington was born in Baltimore, MD on April 21, 1917 and was the daughter of the late John and Mary Taylor Kirby.
Dolly was one of 6 siblings. She led a fulfilling childhood in rural Maryland, and was then educated in the Baltimore City School System. Following high school, Dolly moved to Wilkes-Barre to raise a family. After successfully raising three children, she was employed by the Silver Top Diner for 25 years until its closing. She was a beloved figure at the Silver Top for decades, before retiring at the age of 78. Upon her retirement, Dolly maintained her residence in South Wilkes-Barre for several years, before moving to Harveys Lake to be close to her son John, and his wife Cathy. Throughout her life, Dolly was affectionately known for her compassionate nature and her amazing sense of humor. She was fortunate enough to travel the world and her ability to make her family and friends laugh was unsurpassed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Gladys and Leah, brothers, Archie, Leonard, and Colin, children, Virginia Lee Kolesar and George Martinson, and grandchildren, George Martinson and Thelma Kolesar.
She leaves behind a loving family consisting of her son, John Martinson and his wife Cathy of Harveys Lake; grandchildren, Colin Martinson, Martin Martinson, John Martinson, and Jennifer Kolesar; several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family from the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corner of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek, with Rev. L. D. Reed of the Emmanuel Assembly of God Church, Harveys Lake, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Private interment will be in the Perrego Cemetery, Harveys Lake.
The family would like to thank Lakeside Health and Rehab for their compassionate care throughout the past two years. Gratitude is also expressed to Compassionate Care Hospice, and Drs. Kurello and Patel. Special thanks to Linda and Becky at Lakeside.
